The Experience
Private Jeweller vs Retail Shop: What's the Difference?
Two very different ways to buy fine jewellery — and how to know which suits you.
When most people picture buying fine jewellery, they picture a shop: a bright display window in a mall, glass counters, staff in matching uniforms. That's retail jewellery, and it's how the vast majority of pieces are sold. But there's another way many people don't know exists until a friend quietly recommends it — the private jeweller.
Understanding the difference can genuinely change how much you pay, what you walk away with, and how the whole experience feels. Here's an honest comparison from someone on the private side of the table.
What is a private jeweller?
A private jeweller works by appointment rather than through a walk-in shopfront. Instead of maintaining an expensive retail space and a floor of staff, they meet clients in a private setting, source pieces to suit each person, and often specialise in bespoke work. The relationship is direct — frequently with the owner and expert themselves, not a rotating sales team.
It's the way fine jewellery was bought for generations before shopping malls existed, and it's quietly returning as buyers grow more discerning about value and authenticity.
Where your money actually goes
This is the difference that surprises people most. A retail jewellery price has to cover a great deal before it reaches the stone in your hand:
- Prime retail rent — mall and high-street locations are among the most expensive commercial space there is.
- Sales commissions — many retail staff earn a percentage of what they sell, which is built into your price.
- Inventory and display — a full shop floor of stock that must be financed and insured.
- Brand marketing — the advertising you see is paid for by the pieces that sell.
A private jeweller carries few of these costs. The result is simple: more of your budget reaches the actual stone and craftsmanship, rather than the overheads around it. For the same spend, you can often own a better piece.
An honest side-by-side
| Retail Shop | Private Jeweller | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Walk-in, public, often busy | Private, by appointment, unhurried |
| Who serves you | Sales staff, may vary each visit | The jeweller directly, every time |
| Pricing | Carries rent, commission, marketing | More budget reaches the stone |
| Selection | What's in stock on the floor | Sourced and curated to you |
| Bespoke | Sometimes, often outsourced | A core specialty |
| Pressure | Can be commission-driven | Consultative, no rush |
What "by appointment" really means
Some people assume "by appointment only" signals something intimidating or exclusive in a stuffy way. In practice it's the opposite — it means the time is yours. There's no queue behind you, no staff member glancing at the next customer, no closing-time pressure. You can take an hour to hold different stones against the light, ask every question, and change your mind twice. For a purchase this meaningful, that space to think is a genuine luxury.
When a retail shop makes more sense
To be fair, retail has real advantages, and an honest guide should say so. If you want to browse spontaneously without booking, buy something small on the spot, or you specifically want a particular international brand's boxed product and its brand experience, a retail shop is the natural choice. There's nothing wrong with it — it's simply built for a different kind of purchase.
When a private jeweller is the better choice
A private jeweller tends to suit you when:
- The piece matters — an engagement ring, an anniversary, an heirloom.
- You want honest guidance and grading, not a sales pitch.
- You'd like more of your budget in the stone than in the storefront.
- You're considering bespoke, or redesigning jewellery you already own.
- You value a lasting relationship with someone who'll service and advise on your pieces for years.
The VANA way
We're a third-generation family of jewellers, and we chose the private path deliberately. When you sit with us, you sit with Wayne and Emily — the same two people, every time. Real stones on the table, honest grading in plain language, and the unhurried space to make a decision you'll be happy with for decades. It's not for everyone. But for the moments that matter most, we think it's the way fine jewellery was always meant to be bought.
